What is this book about?

Gil Tavister saw his shoulder straps ripped form his uniform, his saber snapped in half. It was 1857, a year when the Apache war drums had started to thunder, and the embittered aristocrat, Major Becknell, had dismissed Gil from the army in disgrace. In an army divided by hate, neither side wanted him. He was forced to hide with runaway slaves. But an eager recruiting officer overlooked his past and he came back to the army, his secret hidden beneath an enlisted man's uniform. It would be a long and bloody fight back--but Gil had to make it, had to face Becknell man-to-man in the raging heat of battle. And only one of them could come out alive.
