What is this book about?

Elisa had grown up among the intimate revelations and innermost secrets of the prostitute’s profession. The mysteries and shame of the men and women in Paris reached her in her little bed. When she expierenced love herself, and realized that her soldier’s need for her was sexual as well as emotional, she could only react with the tense violence that had characterized her whole life.
